Morehouse College 29th Annual 'A Candle In The Dark' Gala
February 21, 2017
When I was in college, one of the most memorable events I had the opportunity to attend was the Morehouse College Annual ‘A Candle in The Dark’ Gala held during their Founders Week. As a recent Spelman Alumna, I couldn’t miss an opportunity to get dressed up and have a good time with some friends and colleagues. This year was also particularity special because the college was celebrating their Sesquicentennial Anniversary.
Now that I spend my days navigating Corporate America, I really look forward to attending events like A Candle in The Dark simply because it reminds me of how blessed I was to be able to attend a Historically Black College. It was there I was able to be in the presence of such great Black people doing even great things, so anytime I get the chance to be surrounded by that, I definitely take it.
In addition to dressing up and seeing old friends, I really love the gala because it recognizes and honors Black men for their leadership, service, and philanthropy in their respective fields and they even honor celebrities for their work and accomplishments - Usher and Tyler Perry were among the Morehouse Alum chosen to be Candle Award recipients.
The gala was held at the Downtown Atlanta Hyatt Regency and everyone looked amazing. I typically wear black to formal events, so I made it a priority to switch it up and attempt to step out of my comfort zone, and I was really pleased with the outcome. I got my dress from Windsor for less than $60, so it was a steal and it looked great.
